03 Oct 2018 Wed – “More Roman Ruins by Portamarin River” and “Pulpo a la Gallega”

The 8 km walk on Wednesday, Oct 3, started from Hotel Alfonso in Sarria immediately after breakfast at 10:00 am. I was not prepared for a sudden cold weather that morning at 45 deg F (7 deg C). I was wearing short sleeve shirt but I figured that if I exert a little effort, I would sweat it out and compensate. Well… it did not take that long to wish for a little more effort because as soon as I made that turn from the hotel to the next street, the path to the Camino Frances leads me to a steep 50 step climb to the next road.

The 8 km walk continued on past moderate climbs and valleys mostly passing through fields of farmland, cow pastures and a tract of eucalyptus trees until I reached the next town called “A Pena” at 1:30 pm.

From here, I picked up the bus to have lunch in the town of Portomarin at a place called “Pousada de Portomarin”. The place overlooks a river with remains of Roman ruins directly on the river designed for catching fish.

After very late lunch in Portomarin, the autobus takes me to the town of Melide where my stay for Wednesday evening is booked at a small hotel called “Carlos 96”. I arrived in the town of Melide at about 6:00 pm which gives me plenty of time to tour the city before a much needed rest. As Chicho has mentioned earlier during this blog, this is the town where you can find and savor the town’s delicacy called “Pulpo a La Gallega”. I tried it out at a small Pulpo Tapas bar with a bottle of San Miguel beer and the cook was very welcoming to give me a photo op with her as she pulls a batch of cooked “Pulpo”.
